BAD DOG THEATRE (Formerly Theatresports)

October 14
Alumni Night Gala of Grand Improvisors of the Past (No, they're not dead just improvising together again after a decade!)

Hosted by me, Jane Luk
To start the evening we have an amazing lineup of improvisors.

Alumni Cast: Jenny Parsons (Second City), Bruce Hunter (Puppets Who Kill) , Linda Kash (Top Angel for Philly Cream Cheese), Kevin Frank (Pet Project), Michael Williams-Stark (Making Faces), Paul de la Rosa (Suspect), Sam Agro (Canadian Space Opera Company.

Then we have....

Long time improv troupe, The Chumps, entertained with their style of long form and sketch back in the early nineties at the legendary BIG CITY IMPROV, a space devoted entirely to the art of improv. It is now the quaint Amato Pizza on Queen West but all those memories of improvised sandal epics, Star Trek parodies, movie parodies and Wed Aids still linger among the anchovies and oranciata. They also had their own CBC radio segment!

Come and see the reunion of Moira Dunphy (Second City), Lisa Merchant (Train 48), Jerry Shaefer (Red Green), Garry Campbell (Mad TV), Gary Pearson, (This Hour has 22 Min.) Warren Wilson as the Beaver and fresh from his honeymoon, David R. Healey all on the same stage!

What a fantastic lineup. All the performers started out at Theatresports and have gone on to much bigger things like...television, film, houses and kids! They have generously donated their time and talent for this special night.

Lend us your bums and we'll make you laugh them off that night. How's that for a selling feature? All proceeds go to the Bad Dog Theatre, a not for profit theatre company who could really use your generousity and support.

Then celebrate with us after the show with some nibblies and refreshments.

Hope to see you there! Reserve online now and save yourself added aggravation on the night.

May 2005
The incredibly successful run of Hongbu, Nolbu and The Tale of the Magic Pumpkins written by Jean Yoon came to a close on May 9 as the final sold-out school show came to an end. One of the best projects that I have ever been involved in, I cannot commend enough each and every person that I came into contact with at the Lorraine Kimsa Theatre for Young People. Fantastic people there. I highly reccommend it!
Rehearsals began in early March where the mighty ensemble of four actors (Insurp Choi as Nolbu, Richard Lee as Hongbu, Nina Lee Aquino as Mira and yours truly as Myung-Mi) excitedly worked under the patient, watchful eye of director, Allen MacInnis. Between the four of us, an action-packed hour of multiple roles (at least four per person!) lightning fast changes and great low tech special effects delighted both adult and young audiences alike.

The level of talent that I worked with was only surpassed by everyone's incredible professionalism. Richard Lee not only played Hongbu, but was also the Fight Director. I shared a dressing room with the lovely, spunky Nina Lee Aquino and couldn't believe how many projects she was juggling as well as the demanding role she had in this production. As well as working for Native Earth Theatre, she's also an incredible dramaturge and director for Fu-Gen Theatre. They are currently touring Banana Boys by Leon Aureus in Ottawa. Check it out! As for Insurp, who is a very talented and funny, funny guy...he's one of the Banana Boys. I'm going to be working with these new found talent pals again in July for the Dim Sum Festival at Harbourfront.
All the actors had to learn new skills like puppetting a bird on a stick, speaking and drumming in traditional Korean while sweating buckets and dealing with unique audience interaction every show. (Photos coming to Gallery soon!)

April saw the closing of The Tim Sims Playhouse of the Second City Stage in Toronto. The many acts to perform for the last time ranged from Urban Myth (from the beginnings of the Tim Sims Playhouse) to the more recent avant garde clown stylings of Burnt Marshmallows leaving many "momentoes" behind for generations to come. I, myself, decided to take pictures of the last audience from the stage and then I asked the lovely Aurora Browne to take a picture of me on the Tim Sims for the last time. Photos coming to the Gallery soon.

January 2005
The New Year has started off with a bang! In the first two weeks of January, Jane was whisked away to balmy Winnipeg to work with the very funny, the very clever Al Rae of CBC radio. Then she returned to Toronto to write and perform with CBC Radio, applying all her new-learned craft from Al. You can hear some of Jane's sketches on Metro Morning (Usually between the hours of 7 to 8 a.m.) and Here and Now (Starts from 3:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.) both on CBC Radio 1 (FM 99.1).
In February she was very thrilled to be reprising her role as Agnes yet again for Train 48! This has been her most evil performance to date although it was also her best hair day on the show.
On Saturday February 12, Jane will be featured as one of Claudio Garcia de la Huerta's interviews on Big City Small World, CBC Radio 1 FM 99.1. Check http://www.cbc.ca/bigcitysmallworld for more details.
Then in mid March, Jane will be starting rehearsals for the world premiere of Jean Yoon's Hongbu, Nolbu and the Magic Pumpkins at the lovely Lorraine Kimsa Theatre for Young People. http://www.lktyp.ca/stage.html
Hope you can make it out to the shows running from April 9 to May 18 2005. (More on that later!)

December 2004
With the Christmas season in full swing, you can see Jane as Nurse Carr in Stolen Miracle, a made for TV movie showing on Dec. 24, 2004 at 9pm on CFTO (Channel 8 in the Rogers Area. Check local listings!) and Dec. 25, 2004 at 4pm. (Same station.)

Also, Jane is appearing as Mrs. Cratchit in A Twisted Christmas Carol at the Bad Dog Theatre (http://www.baddogtheatre.com 138 Danforth, Toronto 416.491.3115 Box Office). This is a limited run (Dec. 19 - 23, 2004) so call and reserve before this hilariously improvised version is gone! Tickets are only $12 for an hour and half of great family entertainment. This brings us to the end of the year of Jane's activities.

Summer 2004

She had a killer summer this year appearing as Rob Lowe's secretary, Deedee in Perfect Strangers, as a dirty cop in Missing, a reporter in Our Fathers and the non-singing pharmacist for Shoppers Drug Mart. Other selected television and film appearances include Gemini award winning Interrogation of Michael Crowe, 2001 World Improv Championships-Just for Laughs, Elvira Kurt's Adventures in Comedy (Standup), Queer As Folk, Must Be Santa, Lonesome Dove, Kids in the Hall, Dead Ringers and It's always something: The Gilda Radner Story. She is also thrilled to bits to be reprising her role as evil domineering Agnes on Train 48 this October 5, 2004.

As an improvisor, Jane has performed at Second City Toronto, Loose Moose Theatre Calgary, Vancouver Theatresports, Theatresports Toronto, as well as the Comedy Network's Improv Heaven and Hell with the Devil's Advocates. Jane co-created the original Star Trek parodies at Big City Improv playing Sulu and Saavik. Jane is also a senior instructor with The Second City Training Centre and Theatresports Toronto. Jane is a four-time nominee for the Canadian Comedy Awards for Funniest Female Improvisor and will be heading down to London this October 2004 to take in the festivities.

Jane's live stage work includes Betty Quan's Mother Tongue playing Mother (Cahoots Theatre Projects), The Fabulous Smokey Topaz Multimedia Extravaganza as Smokey Topaz Lounge Lizardesse, live variety talk show host. (Toronto Fringe, Producer), Once upon a time in the Park as Anji (Cahoots Theatre Projects), The Arabian Nights as Shahrazade (Tarragon Extra Space and CBC Radio Drama) and the Dora and Chalmers award winner i.d. She will also be part of an improv ensemble in Hairy Patter and the Improvisors Stone at the Bad Dog Theatre starting this October 1, 2004.

Jane wrote, produced and directed her video short How To Be More Chinese which received critical acclaim from film festivals both nationally and internationally and won Best Comedy at the Cabbagetown Short Film and Video Festival. How To Be More Chinese also enjoyed a two-year run on the Comedy Network.
